“The Good Folk” can take many forms – human or non-human, supernaturally beautiful or hideous, tall and slender, or small enough to sit in your hand. If treated well, they can be very helpful, but those versed in the habits of the Little People know better than to rely on their benevolence. Even an unintentional slight can be enough to provoke severe retribution.
Modern depictions of fairies often appear as small, feminine creatures with insect-like wings. They may appear humanoid or disguise themselves as plants, flowers, or animals. Some are associated with specific elements (fire, water, earth, or air). However, these types of creatures are only a small representation of the variety of spirits that fall under the category of “fairy.”
Fairies Can be Beneficial or Harmful
A fairy that likes you may decide to assist with your chores or housework. Examples of these fairies include brownies, kobolds, and clurichauns, and usually do their work while you sleep. However, if you insult them, draw attention to them, or become too reliant on their help, they will abandon you – often undoing any housework they have done!
Fairies are Descendants of the Gods In Irish Lore
In Celtic mythology, the Aos sí (people of the mounds) are descendants of the Tuatha dé Danann (the pre-Christian gods of Ireland). They live under hills, lochs, and forests, and are extremely territorial, distributing severe (sometimes deadly) punishments to trespassers, even if the trespass is accidental. However, they can also be quite benevolent to deserving humans.
For this reason, treating the Aos sí with respect is very important! Some people use descriptions like “the Fair Folk” or “The Good Neighbors” when speaking of the Aos sí, and will leave offerings of food and drink during certain times of the year. They also avoid fairy rings, where fairies are believed to dance at night. People will also carry iron to protect themselves from malevolent fairies.
Fairies in Shakespeare’s Works
William Shakespeare wrote about fairies in many of his plays. One such creature is Puck, a hobgoblin from English folklore. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, he serves the fairy king Oberon and boasts of the pranks he plays on humans, including souring milk and tripping old women. When Oberon, out of pity for a love-struck maiden, orders Puck to cast a love spell on the boy who spurned her, Puck enchants the wrong boy, leading him to abandon his true love in favor of the first girl. Although Oberon is angry at the resulting chaos, Puck delights in it, stating, “Lord, what fools these mortals be!”
Honor Fairies with Jewelry
Fairies may be shy but love indirect flattery. Celtic Crystal Design Jewelry has beautiful fairy pieces worked in gold or silver which are sure to flatter any sprites you may encounter. Our collection includes delicate fairy earrings accented with semiprecious stones, necklaces depicting fairy queens, and celestial fairies dancing with stars and moonlight. If you love fairies as much as we do, you’re sure to find something special!
