Celtic knots are often considered symbols of eternity because there is neither a beginning nor an ending to the strand that creates them. They can be simple or complex, and often have multiple meanings. Celtic knotwork is also old, dating to the seventh century, and is influenced by artwork dating back to the Iron Age.
One of the most recognizable – and possibly one of the oldest – motifs is the trinity knot, also known as the triquetra. Depictions of trinity knots have been found on ancient coins, rune stones, and medieval Christian manuscripts. Today the triquetra is used by modern Wiccan and neo-pagan practitioners and depicted in entertainment, including shows such as Charmed and The Walking Dead.
Pre-Celtic Trinity Knots
The triquetra is composed of three interlacing arcs, sometimes connected with a circle, and is believed to be one of the oldest forms of endless knot. Depictions of the triquetra have been found in Iron-age artifacts from Lycia (modern Turkey) and artwork of the Germanic Migration period.
Between the fourth and 11th centuries, Germanic peoples in the north erected memorial rune stones decorated with animal motifs and knotwork. Early stones invoked the Norse gods, but by the 10th century Christianity had reached northern Europe and Christian themes began to blend with existing pagan themes. Depictions of triquetra motifs on these stones could be related to either Odinism or Christianity and were generally reserved for persons of high status.
The Trinity Knot in Insular Art
The confluence of Germanic invasions and Christian conversions in the Celtic islands led to the development of Insular art, a unique art form combining German interlace artwork with Celtic art styles and Christian imagery. Surviving examples can be seen in metalwork, illuminated manuscripts like the Book of Kells, and the great stone crosses found throughout the Celtic islands. Trinity knots were a popular motif in Insular art, which was epitomized by intricate, colorful animal motifs and ornate knotwork.
Trinity Knot Symbolism
Those who wear the trinity knot are honoring an ancient art deeply rooted in spiritual symbolism. To Christians, the three points of the trinity knot symbolize the Holy Trinity of God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. To non-Christians, the triquetra can represent many things: the triple aspect of the goddess, the three aspects of humanity (mind, body, soul), the elements of earth, air, and water, or any elements which come in threes. A circle woven through the three points symbolizes the connection between the elements, and a double trinity knot symbolizes the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds.
