The Celtic cross is believed to have its roots in ancient pagan beliefs. The stone circle at Calanais, on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland, is formed in a rough circle, with an even-armed cross within it.
The stone crosses in Scotland and Ireland are a continuation of a long tradition of Celtic standing stone crosses. This tradition of stone crosses began with the introduction of Christianity in the 9th to 10th century.
All parts of the Celtic Cross have symbolic meanings. Knotwork represents eternal life. The Maze pattern is the path of spiritual growth. Spirals also symbolize spiritual growth.
About this cross in Thurso, Scotland
The Skinnet Cross design was taken from an 8th century Pictish cross-slab that was found in the far northeast of Scotland. These large stone slabs always have carving on both sides and are unique to Scotland.
The knotwork on the face of the cross symbolizes the eternal theme; the Alpha and Omega – beginning and end in the eternal circle. This is the very essence of the Celtic never-ending knotwork designs. At the bottom, there is a very old Pictish symbol called the rams-horn and is a variation of the spiral.
